Uplight and Downlight in One Floor Lamp

Zhexian Lighting · October 21, 2026 · 3 min read

A reading space has more than one surface to illuminate. A page needs light, while the ceiling and surrounding room contribute to the space's overall appearance. A floor lamp with upward and downward light sources can address these layers separately. Its value lies in where the light goes and how the two outputs can be controlled.

The Zhexian ZX-F0281 brings this idea into one freestanding design, with independently controlled upper and lower light sources, three output modes and continuous dimming.

Two light paths with different roles

Downward output sends light toward the area below the lamp head. Upward output travels toward the ceiling; light reflected from that surface can then contribute to the room's indirect illumination.

The ceiling becomes part of the light path. A matt surface scatters reflected light in many directions, producing a more diffuse component. This is why combining direct and indirect output changes the distribution of light rather than simply adding another bright source. ERCO's explanation of indirect lighting describes this relationship between the luminaire and the reflecting surfaces.

Three ways ZX-F0281 directs its light

The ZX-F0281 floor lamp offers three preset combinations:

ModeActive light sourcesWhat changes
ReadingUpper and lowerDirect downward output and upward output operate together.
CreativeLower onlyThe upper source is off, leaving the downward light active.
RelaxUpper onlyThe lower source is off, leaving the upward light active.

These are changes in output direction. All three modes are listed at 4000 K in the original mode table; the model's colour-temperature specification is 4000 K ± 200 K. Selecting Relax therefore changes which light source operates, rather than switching to a warmer colour temperature. See the original ZX-F0281 specifications.

That distinction is useful when describing the product: the same white-light appearance can accompany different combinations of upward and downward illumination.

Independent dimming adds another choice

The ZX-F0281 also provides independent dimming of the upper and lower light sources, with a specified stepless range of 10–100%. A rotary knob and touch keys control the outputs.

Independent adjustment allows the two components to be balanced instead of forcing both to change together. For example, someone working with paper may prefer a different balance from someone using the same space for a quiet conversation. The available controls let the user change that balance while keeping the lamp in place.

Switching an output off is a separate option, as shown by the lower-only and upper-only modes. A 10% dimming setting should not be confused with an off state.

The room contributes to the result

Upward output relies on a reflecting surface, so the ceiling finish and the lamp's position matter. A room photograph cannot establish how the same lamp will illuminate another interior. ERCO's vertical and horizontal lighting examples illustrate how lighting different room surfaces changes their visual presence.

The practical appeal of a dual-output floor lamp is this choice of light layers. It can retain both outputs for one activity and use a single output for another. The actual desk illumination and reflected light still depend on the setting, position and room.
