An open book and a notebook do not always sit on the same line. A page may be angled towards the reader, while notes occupy the space beside it. As those objects move, the direction from which light reaches them becomes part of the reading and writing experience.
The Zhexian ZX-TS1 desk lamp gives this relationship a physical form: two light arms, each with three-axis adjustment, can be aimed independently towards the work surface. Its structure brings movement into the lighting arrangement alongside brightness and white-light selection.
Direction is a separate lighting choice
The position of a light source affects which surfaces receive its light and where objects interrupt the light path. A hand, a raised book or another item on the desk can cast a shadow across the work.
WorkSafe Victoria's guidance on office lighting identifies redirecting lighting and removing barriers as ways to address shadows. It also describes adjustable task lamps as an option where light from a particular direction is needed.
This is the practical reason for movable light arms. Their direction can respond to the position of the task. The result still depends on the surrounding lighting and objects; having two arms does not by itself establish shadow-free illumination.
Two arms with independent aiming
On ZX-TS1, each light panel can be aimed separately. In a layout with a reference book beside a writing area, the two panels can be oriented towards those different positions within their available movement.
Independent aiming concerns the mechanical position of the arms. The slide dimmer provides the documented brightness adjustment. These are distinct actions: repositioning an arm changes its relationship to the work surface, while the control changes the light output.
The original specifications describe three-axis adjustment without giving numerical rotation limits. Their handling guidance is simple: move the arms by hand and do not force them beyond their travel stops. The feature is useful movement within the product's design, without a claim of unlimited rotation.
Side-emitting arms and acrylic optics
The ZX-TS1 documentation describes side-emitting light arms with acrylic optics and no direct view of the LEDs. The optical structure is therefore another part of the design alongside the adjustable joints.
The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety's lighting overview explains that a complete luminaire controls and distributes light, with optical components influencing how that light emerges. For ZX-TS1, the stated acrylic optics describe the documented construction. They do not establish glare performance from every viewing position.
Direction, brightness and white appearance
ZX-TS1 gives these three choices different controls:
| Choice | Documented adjustment | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Direction | Two independently aimed, three-axis light arms | The panels' orientation towards the task |
| Brightness | Continuous 10–100% slide dimming | The selected light-output level |
| White appearance | Rotary selection of nominal 2700 K, 3600 K and 5000 K settings | The selected white-light appearance |
The colour temperatures in the table are named settings; the original PDF lists measured sample values separately. The dimming range starts at 10%, so that lower limit should not be confused with switching the lamp off.
Together, these adjustments allow the lamp's physical arrangement and light settings to respond to a changing desk activity. The appeal is the combination of independently positioned panels and accessible controls in one desk luminaire.
